Outcomes of This Course

Level 1 - Chavutti Thirumal

After completion of this 10-session course, the student will have the knowledge and ability to confidently perform a basic South Indian barefoot massage therapy (chavutti thirumal) sequence, and apply techniques to address all major muscle groups.

The student will be able to identify the necessary equipment to perform chavutti thirumal with integrity, along with thorough equipment sanitation procedures.

The student will be able to discuss the historical context within which chavutti thirumal developed. They will have the ability to distinguish the types of people and conditions for which it is indicated today, as well as identify contraindications to the application of this treatment.

Upon completion of all 10 sessions (8 lessons + two practical exams), 19 CE in person hands-on hours will be awarded automatically for Florida LMTs. Out of state LMTs are welcome to apply for this course, but please understand that no CE credit will be awarded unless you are licensed in Florida.

Student Experience

Classical Method

This course in chavutti thirumal will be given in the traditional Indian style of teaching/learning known as Guru-Shishya Parampara. This approach is characterized by a significant investment of attention and care on the part of both the teacher and the student in order that the method will be transmitted as purely and accurately as possible.

This training will be offered in cohorts of 2 students learning together to facilitate interactive learning. One student learns to apply the techniques on the other (kinesthetic learning), while the other pays attention to how the techniques feel (proprioceptive learning), and then the roles are switched. The period of initial training is rigorous and exacting, wherein the methods and techniques are imparted from teacher to student in collaboration through demonstration and mirroring (working in tandem, side by side), along with direct hands-on guidance and correction by the teacher (wherein the teacher uses her hands to literally guide the student’s foot along the correct lines of contact with the recipient’s body).

Expository instruction, lecture and a short documentary video, is given to impart a basic knowledge of key features of Ayurveda, and the historical context within which chavutti thirumal was developed.

After the initial training is complete (in this case, a series of 8 lessons + two practical tests), the student is supported and encouraged to continue practicing in the manner in which she learned until, over time and with experience, she discovers through her own process of inquiry the best ways to adapt the application of this modality to the unique features of her own body, environment, and in response to her clients’ particular bodies and the issues they present.
